It all started when I drew the 2011 Sportsman’s Bison Tag. I had been putting in for deer, elk, moose, and sheep since the Sportsman’s tags became available, but this was the first time that I tried for bison. I figured that if I ever wanted to hunt free roaming bison, that this was the only way I would be able to do it. So I put in, and to my surprise, one of the greatest emails in my life came.

I wasn’t going to use a guide. I had a couple of friends that had hunted bison before and were excited to go and help out. When my hunt opened, I was on my way down to begin my hunt. I received a text letting me know that I was going to be on my own. An hour away from the hunting site, I decided to go solo.

After stalking to 20 yards of a bison, I came to the conclusion that I was going to need help. I have harvested multiple elk by myself, but there was no way that I could handle a bison, in the heat of September, by myself. I then decided to get some help.

That is when I got in contacted Guide Taylor Albrecht, with High Top Outfitters from Richfield, Utah. This was the best thing that could have happened. Taylors experience and knowledge of the area, and ability to score bison made all the difference in the world.

I was able to harvest a Boone and Crockett Bison that made the All Time Record Book. After the animal was on the ground, High Top had everything in place to get the animal off of the mountain and to the processor. They provided me with information for a meat processor and taxidermist, both of which were top notch.

This hunt will be a great memory for the rest of my life. I can’t imagine it going better than it did. High Top Outfitters was the reason that it went so well.

First of all let me just tell you and the guys thanks! I've been hunting whitetails for at 25 years and elk for the last 6 years. My first elk hunt was in Colorado and it hooked me and I didn't even take a bull. The next few years consisted of many different locations trying to find a decent bull and they all ended in a tag that was not filled.

Just like the old saying "if I'd known then what I know now", well that is so true with elk hunting.

Hunting the Pahvant with High Top Outfitter Guide Royce Stevens, Guide Adam Stevens and Guide Brendan Robins was by far an elk hunt of a lifetime.

These guys go the extra mile every day to make sure you are in elk. They make certain that you have an opportunity not only at some good bulls but at some great bulls. I had opportunities everyday at bulls and holding off for what they considered a big one was the hardest part of the hunt. They were all big to me, I've never seen so many big bulls on a consistent basis in all my previous elk hunts combined.

After deciding to hunt elk in Utah in 2011 I knew I needed to find the right outfitter to help me through the process of bidding on a tag and deciding what areas to concentrate on before even getting to the hunt. I looked at a few different guide services and narrowed it down to three. After contacting Outfitter Shane Scott at HTO I knew I found the right outfitter.

From the start Shane was easy to talk to and had a wealth of information that helped me to narrow the tags down we were going to bid on. He did all the work for the next two months attending several banquets around the state until we eventually got a LE tag on the Beaver Unit. Never having spent any time in the area Shane sent me maps as well as frequent updates throughout the summer including dozens of photos of the area he was scouting. Shane and I even went out to the range for a day prior to the hunt to make sure I could hit the target. I felt part of the hunt the entire time which made the anticipation of opening day even greater.

Finally the time to hunt arrived and I was very happy to get to camp and find we were well outfitted and definitely prepared for anything. The food was great including the daily lunch and snacks that were ready for our packs each morning. Accommodations were both comfortable and clean.

Once the hunt started the guys worked harder than even I expected regularly putting in 18 hour plus days. We passed on a lot of animals during the first week of the hunt hoping to find a true trophy; in fact I counted at least 15 bulls between 320 and 350 that first week.

I truly enjoyed everyday day as we hunted many different areas of this very large unit. As we got near the end of the hunt we settled on two nice bulls and with HTO Guide Cade Penney and Shane guiding us with the optics, HTO Guide Matt Rhinehart and I made a stalk on the next to last night that resulted in a very respectable 7x7 that measured 360.

I am thrilled with the results and truly enjoyed my time with the HTO.

I would recommend HTO without hesitation to not only do a great job of guiding but also to make sure all the other items that go into a hunt of a lifetime are in place.

After much research and several conversations with Outfitter Jay Simon and Outfitter Shane Scott I decided to book my hunt with High Top Outfitters. A month or so before the season HTO had my guides for the Monroe unit.

HTO Guides Eli Jensen and HTO Guide Anthony Whitmore gave me a call. They kept me up to date weekly with the bulls they have been seeing as well as just to chat. Not knowing exactly the time table for my travels, I arrived in Richfield two days prior to the Monroe rifle season opener. When I arrived I contacted Eli and Anthony. That evening they came down from scouting bulls to greet me. We talked for awhile and made scouting plans of our own for the next morning.

That next morning while we were scouting, I could not believe how many elk we saw. There were several mature bulls including a seven by six and a great six by six with a lot of mass. Later that afternoon we dissected all the bulls from the guys previous scouting trips as well as the ones we saw earlier that day. We concluded that the best bull to chase would be the big six by six with a lot of mass.

As evening came so did the thunder, lightning, and rain. It lasted all night and on into opening morning of rifle season. This seemed to shut up the elk because we did not hear or see as many as the day before, although we did spot the seven by six and other younger bulls. The second morning we saw a few smaller bulls and made a couple of stocks with no success. Later that evening we spotted a phenomenal six by six from a long distance away. We made our game plan and had to move fast in order to beat sunset. While we were on the move we lost visual of the herd. Right when we thought we were getting close to the area the bull was in he let out a bugle loud enough to make all three of us shake. We walked another fifteen yards and looked out into the clearing and spotted the bull. I got into shooting position while Eli and Anthony quickly glanced to make sure he was a shooter and not another bull that snuck in. The rest is history, I dropped him at three hundred yards. While coming up to him to my surprise I realized it was the same bull we had been after. I had never been more excited and Eli and Anthony seemed to share that excitement.

I would like to thank my guides Eli Jensen and Anthony Whitmore who did a wonderful job from preseason scouting, cooking at the camp, getting me into the elk, dropping a 350 class bull, and packing him out.

I would also like to thank Outfitter Jay Simon and Outfitter Shane Scott with High Top Outfitters for an unforgettable experience.

I truly cannot wait to do it again!

I learned that Chris grew up in the unit, and has been hunting there all of his life. Chris's younger brother, Mike, knows the area equally well and agreed to come help spot for us.

I got aquainted with my 2011 High Top Outfitter Guide Taylor Albrecht during a 2010 late hunt on Fishlake with my son and his tag. We got to know each other then and I told Taylor about my points and I was sure that I would draw out in 2011.

As luck would have it I did draw a Premium tag for Fishlake area. Taylor was really helpful with alot of information about Fishlake when we went on a few scouting trips to show me around. That meant alot to me. Taylor was very helpful. After our scouting trips I decided to book with High Top Outfitters and to use Taylor Albrecht as my guide, he put in alot of hard work scouting for me and my upcoming hunt.

Taylor several bulls scouted and a plan for the first of the hunt on a bull that he thought I would be pleased with. I got to see this bull on Friday the last day of the archery hunt but decided not to go after him with archery tackle because of a injury to my arm a few days prior to going down to Fishlake. It was very painful to draw back my bow.

Taylor and I decided to wait until opening morning of the early rifle season to go after him, he was nicknamed "Willie" by a 9 year old little girl who saw him on a scouting trip with her dad before the season started. The name came from Willie Wonka and the Chocolate factory movie, because his antlers were such a dark brown color.

The weather did not cooperate the next morning. It rained all night and most of that morning. We could not see anything. We were lucky enough to see Willie about noon time pushing two other bulls over the top. We went back that afternoon and called Willie about half way down the mountain at dark and left him there hoping we could find him in the area the next morning. He was responding well to Taylors elk calling.

We went back to the spot at first light, Taylor spotted a good bull Taylor said was a shooter, I got setup for the shot while he got his spotting scope out to make sure. After Taylor confirmed the bull was a shooter, Taylor ranged the bull at 386 yards. By the time I got setup he was at 400 yards, I took a deep breath and squeezed the trigger. He went down with one shot, the 180 grain Nosler Partition bullet did the job.

To make things even better it turned out to be "Willie". He had broken off his cheater. A great 355", 6 point Bull!!!!

I would recommend High Top Outfitters to anyone thinking about it, you won't be sorry! Especially HTO Guide Taylor Albrecht, he was the best!!! Taylor is a great guy and guide. Taylor worked very hard to make my hunt a hunt of a lifetime.

I hope to be able to draw another tag some day because I will be back hunting with High Top Outfitters.

It was my good fortune this year to be drawn for a coveted "early rifle elk tag" in the Indian Peaks Southwest Desert area. I started to ask around for an outfitter who works the area. A friend of mine recommended High Top Outfitters and gave me the phone number for Outfitter Shane Scott. After speaking with Shane he set me up with my Guide TJ Beus.

I met TJ in Beryl and we drove out to our campsite. We started hunting Saturday morning at 5:30 AM. Before the day was over we had observed several nice bulls but were unable to get a good shot.

TJ knew the area well and the habits of the elk. He was very considerate of the fact that I am 75 years old. Each day for the next 2 days we got into elk. The elk were starting to bugle early and late but during the day would stay in the cedars. This prevented me from getting a clear shot.

On the fourth day, in the afternoon, we hiked up a steep hill which provided us a great lookout over a waterhole 1000 yards away. Almost immediately we spotted a nice bull bugling and chasing 3 cows which were trying to reach the water. The cows led the bull to the base of the mountain from where we were spotting. So we started down the hill to get into shooting range. We dropped down to where we had a clear shot from 350 yards. One shot later and he was on on the ground. Now all we had to do was quarter, cape and pack him 3/4 of a mile to the ATV's.

I cannot praise TJ enough. He was always concerned with my safety. He knew the area we hunted well, did a masterful job of butchering and caping, not to mention hauling most of the elk out to the road by himself.

I had a great hunt and shot a beautiful elk. I was extremely pleased with the guide and complete hunt package "High Top Outfitters" provided for me.

I recommend them highly!

Justin and Coby were chasing 2 bucks. This buck and a 7X8 Non-typical. After a couple of close encounters Justin was set up in the bucks bedding area. Justins buck came in to bed. At 24 yards Justin was able to harvest the buck.
HTO Guide Coby Hunt guides mule deer in the Book Cliffs, Delores Triangle, San Juan and has a specialty hunt guiding Desert Mule Deer in the Utah Southeast Region. Coby is an extreme hunter and guide. He works extremely hard to harvest great animals with his clients.

I got lucky and drew a San Juan Archery Elk Hunt with only 7 points. Knowing the potential of the San Juan unit I wanted to make the most of the opportunity.

I was looking for a guide that would assist me on my hunt, but was willing to let me hunt how I wanted. I was referred to High Top Outfitters by a good friend. Outfitter Shane Scott referred me to HTO Guide Brendan Robins.

Brendan had hunted the San Juan Archery hunt in 2010 and harvested a magnificient bull, so he was familiar with the unit and quality potential. Brendan and I communicated throughout the preseason. Brendan was easy going and has a low stress personality. He had great glassing skills in the field. Several times he spotted a bull and guided me in on it, or judged the bull not worth stalking allowing me time and energy elsewhere. Brendan was working hard to see that I had success. He was willing to do everything I asked him to do.

In this case I went with High Top Outfitters as they were willing to be flexible to provide the support that I wanted. I didn't want someone that had hunted the unit for 20 years that I followed around like a puppy dog. I wanted to make the decisions and Brendan was great at supporting me and helping me every step of the way.

I had been on the lookout for a good buck for my best friend Gabrin, who drew a Utah Book Cliffs archery buck antelope tag. Gabrin now lives on the other side of Utah State and would have limited opportunity to do any scouting.

I happen to work in the area that Gabrin drew and as a result I was able to keep tabs on a few good bucks. Gabrin and I decided that the buck he would go after would be a certain buck I had been seeing for a couple months. I estimated him to be about 70 inches....give or take an inch. I watched him almost daily and then one day I couldn't find him. After a week of not seeing him I had given up on him. I moved back and forth on what I thought was the best buck to try and get and couldn't really decide, nor could Gabrin. Then on the night before the opener Gabrin wanted to go out and take another look where he had been so many times before, we got surpised.

There he was with a half dozen does laying within 100 yards of where he had spent most of his summer. We were stoked!!

The plan was made to sneak in on him and kill him at first light and get him back to the cooler before it got hot. As you might guess the buck didn't get the memo, he and his does were nowhere to be found. Gabrin, Linda (Gabrin's wife), Jay (Gabrin's Dad) and myself spent 3 1/2 hours running back and forth glassing every spot we could think of but couldn't find him anywhere. I had climbed up on the back of the 4wheeler in the bed of the truck to glass and decided to just stay there as Gabrin drove around trying to spot him.

We were hunting some big open desert country. The antelope know how to find small ravines to hide in.

I had a vantage point in the bed of the truck. As we drove slowly down a road I lightly thumped on the side of the truck and glassed up three does, wait a forth, and a fifth, and holy cow, I finally found him! I got down and told Gabrin the good news. We made a plan. It was a long shot to try and sneak on an antelope and really tough given that he was with 6 does.

We had the wind in our favor and a long stalk but we were ready to hit it! We came out on our hands and knees at a predetermined point overlooking the bedded antelope. We had a doe already in view so we had to be very silent and stay down. Gabrin reached back to me for the range finder, he told me he is at 101 yards.....no way.

We decided to go back off of the finger we were on and go to the next finger on the other side of the antelope which would put us within easy range of them. It would be risky as we were starting to get upwind from them.

As we crested the ridge 20 minutes later we got busted by a doe, she stood up and stared at us. It would prove to be too late for the buck as we had closed the distace to 60 yards and the buck was still asleep, nose in the dirt, paying no attention to the doe.

Gabrins shot was true and buck was leaving the coutry. If you have ever seen an antelope take off after the shot, you know what I am talking about. He tried to keep going but he ended up a short way off doing somersaults in the dust!

After a photo session we hurried to town and taped him out at 74 3/8ths. Gabrins pre hunt preparation, archery marksmanship and readiness for this hunt was paramount in this stalk coming together. I have watched Gabrin become an incredible archery hunter over the last few years. I hope to go on many more hunts together with Gabrin.

My hunt with High Top Outfitters was absolutely spectacular. The 2011 spring bear hunt did not start off so well for me as the weather did not cooperate and allow for us to get many bears found to chase. As I started to see my hunt wind down after waiting for eight years to draw the tag, I knew I needed to have someone who could give me the best opportunity possible.
I knew High Top Outfitters was the place to go. I have hunted with several outfitters and I must say that Guide Brett Guymon is a class act and a great person to be around not to metion he is a great houndsmen. Brett, along with help from Jay Simon really made sure that I did not go without opportunity. I had three days left for my hunt and Brett was able to chase me a bear each day giving me an opportunity to see the bear each time. After missing an opportunity on the second to last day I was worried I would not have another opportunity but Brett was positive and was able to put a bear in a tree the very next morning which happened to be the last day of the hunt. Brett worked hard each day hiking with his dogs (in tennis shoes none the less) to make sure we could get a bear going and to make sure I had every opportunity possible to fill my tag.
I am very impressed with the desire and determination of the High Top Outfitters staff. I want to thank each person who helped out on my hunt and made it a successful one. The 300 pound chocolate cinnamon boar I killed was an awesome sight and will make for a great rug in my home. Not only will I have great memories of the hunt but I feel I have made several new friends that will last a lifetime.
I would gladly hunt with High Top Outfitters again in the future.

Youth hunters are the future of our sport. On 4-10-11 my son Cory took his first Utah cougar. After a long hike Cory used a Glock 26, 9mm and 115 JHP Cor-Bon ammunition to take the cat. Cougar hunting is a physical sport. The hunt challenged Cory physically, but he never gave up. He was rewarded at the end of the day. Team HTO staff worked hard to help Cory be successful. Felicia Stevens 191 inch Henry Mountain Buck, 2010.

At the end of April 2010 I received a call from High Top Outfitters Guide Royce Stevens. Royce was at work but had to take a break. Royce told me with excitement that his credit card had been billed for a Utah Premium Deer Tag and it could only mean one thing. Royce told me his wife Felicia must have drawn the Henry Mountains rifle deer tag with 6 bonus points. He could not think, and was in no shape to be at work now, but it would be a long wait for the email results...

Confirmation came and Felicia had beat the odds and pulled one of the best tags in North America for Mule Deer.

Royce along with his brother and High Top Outfitters Guide Adam Stevens are both mule deer junkies. They hunt shed horns and pride themselves on hunting for some of Utah's best bucks on the Utah Southern Region Mule Deer Unit.

A call was made to Royces good friend and High Top Outfitters Guide Brendan Robins. Brenden was already full of excitement as he had already drawn a personal tag for the San Juan Archery Bull Elk hunt, at the Hunt Expo. Brendan was all in, and ready to hit the Henrys after a August San Juan Hunt.

Royces good friend Paul Pennie runs High Country Horns Taxidermy in Alpine Utah. After Royce gave Paul the news of Felicia's tag, Paul told Royce he would be there. The versatile group made a great team on this hunt.

Planning began and Royce made summer scouting trips down to the unit in July. Giant Velvet bucks kept him awake at night.

High Top Outfitters Guide Kasey Edgehouse had a good friend who had drawn the Henrys Archery Tag. Royce and Kasey networked information and the scouting was coming together nicely for Felicia's hunt. The group located a bunch of great bucks. Royce and Felicia were looking at a hunt of a lifetime for her first limited entry mule deer hunt.

Opening day came and the team hit it hard. They passed up many bucks. The days passed and a storm came in. The weather turned out real cold. After the storm Felicia kept hunting hard. Finally Royce found the buck Felicia was after. A big 5X4 buck showed up and Felicia made the most of her opportunity. Felicia took the buck with her .270 Winchester.

Felicia's 2010 Henry Mountains buck grossed 191 inches. A trophy of a lifetime, especially when it's your first Utah Mule Deer Buck.

Congratulations to Felicia on a great buck. Thanks to her husband Royce, brother in law Adam Stevens, Brendan Robins and Paul Pennie the hunt was a big success. A hunt to remember, the memories will last a lifetime.....

Hunt Part One:

My name is Tom Pitcher and I have been hunting most of my 57 years. At the SLC Hunting Expo in Feb of 2010 I won a Boulder Plateau Cougar Hunt. I had no experience hunting for cats and I had to find a guide with both experience, knowledge of the country, and dogs. I am a member of the Huntin’ Fool so I called them to get some information.They suggested High Top Outfitters.

I talked to Outfitter Shane Scott.. He quoted costs, advised me about when to expect when lion hunting, asked about my age, physical condition, and my ability to hike. Shane recommended Jared Higgins as a guide. He said Jared had good dogs, was one of the best guides in the state and that Jared would get in touch with me.

Jared contacted me the first time on Dec. 5th and told me that he thought a storm was coming and it would be a good time to go. Storms cover all of the old tracks and make it easier to find the fresh tracks in the snow. He had one four-wheeler and I brought mine down with me.I met him in Circleville, UT on the night of the 5th . He arranged for my lodging at the Bunk House. Funny enough, we found out that we both had the same day job - concrete contractors!

We arranged to meet at 3:00 AM, the next morning. We headed out on time with two four-wheelers and Jared’s six hounds. The early departure time is because the cats, being nocturnal hunters have been going all night and it is easier to see their tracks and get the jump on them so the dogs can begin tracking. We drove up into many canyons. We drove around all day but never cut a fresh track. Jared works very hard at finding tracks and at one point went up a trail so steep that my bike wouldn’t make it so I went back and waited for him at the truck. After a trackless day we ended up in Antimony for a famous ‘Antimony Burger” and decide to try again on the 7th at 3:00.

We drove up several of the same canyons and that morning around 9:00AM we were on the 4-wheelers in the snow and Jared found a track that looked 2-3 days old. So we looked a bit for more tracks but didn’t see any others. Because it was still the freshest track we had cut for two days we decided to turn the dogs loose. We rode the bikes back to truck and picked up three of the older dogs. We put them on the bikes and went back to the location of the tracks. We set the dogs loose about 9:15 and by 10:00 the cat was treed. It was an average-sized female. I was looking for a tom so we got some nice pictures, had another “Antimony Burger’ and decided to wait for another storm and try again. I was eager to go back for a second go round…the dogs had been so fast to get on the cat and it had been very exciting. I remember thinking a guy could get hooked on it, but Jared told me that my first hunt was not a normal hunt…usually it takes hours to tree the cats.

Hunt Part Two:

Jared e-mailed me again on Dec. 16th but I was out of the state, on a horse-buying trip and had to turn him down so we made plans to try later. On Dec 20th Jared advised me that the storms were coming in and that I should get down to Central Utah right away.It snowed the entire trip from my home on the Utah-Idaho border to Marysville but when I arrived in Junction the was barely an inch of snow and it had rained in Antimony. I began to wonder if I would come up empty again. When I met Jared at 5:00 AM in Junction, UT we decided to give it a try since we had both come so far. We went up the same canyons again on the bikes and when we reached the top, the wind was blowing hard and it was beginning to snow more.

Jared cut a track around 8:00AM. We kept cutting tracks. After about 45 minutes looking for more tracks, we decided to go get the dogs. Jared drove the truck & trailer as far as he could.We made it halfway so we put three collared dogs and two men on one four wheeler and headed back to the top, with the other younger dogs following us. We let the three older dogs out on the track.They picked up the scent, but it was tough because the wind was even stronger than before. We could see them tracking the tom up the mountain and we waited and suddenly the dogs started coming back in our direction. We spent a few minutes watching the dogs on the GPS and they crossed the road again. We drove the four-wheeler to where we could sit and see the dogs across the canyon. Next thing we knew the dogs were coming straight for us! They crossed right by our four-wheeler, went up the ridge and 15 minutes later they had the cougar bayed on a huge rock. We followed the dogs to where the tom was bayed, took some great pictures, got within 6 - 10 feet of him and I took my shot. He leaped off the rock, ran about 20 yards and crawled up a tree. I took another shot and the dogs were standing over him when I reached him.

I was shooting a 22 mag pistol and thinking back, I wish I would have gone with a bigger caliber. But I am happy with my cat – a 7’1” tom. I had never considered a lion hunt before I won this one, but after all the fun I had I would go on one every chance I got!

And I would definitely go with High Top Outfitters and Jared Higgins.Jared Higgins is possibly the best guide I have had….even if he told me I STILL didn’t know what a real cougar hunt was like because everything happened so quickly. His knowledge of cat hunting, the terrain, and his outstanding pack of dogs combined with a superior work ethic made this an unforgettable hunt.

"Smokey The Plott" Passed Away 1-12-2011, Sad Day For HTO...

"Smokey the Plott" was an amazing hound. He hated all cats, bears and racoons. He did not discriminate. He hated both equally.

With a cold nose Smokey would run the track silent until he was right on top of his prey, then when he opened up in a bawl you knew it was on. On a good chase you just knew in your heart that soon you would be face to face with whatever Smokey was behind. He never trashed, he never slowed, he had no quit in him. He hunted with determination. Determination and Grit.

Once the quarry was caught, he would never leave. He just waited for you to arrive and take care of business, no matter how long it took you to get there.

At the age of 11 father time caught up to him. If only dog years we the same as human years.

It's hard to let him go.

What is it about a good hound that crushes a mans soul when he leaves... We will miss him..... RIP Smokey 1-12-2011.....

I originally booked my hunt with High Top Outfitters because the unit I was hunting is huge and very rugged. Even though I had advice about areas to concentrate on, I quickly realized that my busy work schedule would not permit me to take the many scouting trips I would need to get to know the unit and areas where the elk were likely to be.

I was lucky enough to draw a Premium Limited Entry tag which allowed me to hunt all of the 2010 hunts on the unit. My plan was to fill my tag on the early rifle hunt in September. I was hunting with High Top Outfitters guide Royce Stevens, who lives on the unit and I quickly learned he knows the area very well and spends a lot of time watching the elk. Right from the start Royce had us in the middle of multiple bulls, and in places I could have never found on my own. Royce is also an expert at spotting and sizing up elk. From over a mile away, Royce was seeing elk I could have never seen. Unfortunately, on the second day of my hunt I fell and broke my ankle, which ended my early rifle hunt.

After a month in a hard cast and a month in a walking boot, I was given the OK to wear two regular shoes/boots on Wednesday, three days before the late rifle season started.

For the late rifle hunt I was hunting with Outfitter Shane Scott. Shane had been scouting and had found a really nice bull not too far from the road. He was real sensitive to my limited mobility, given that I was not completely healed. Long story short, I took a really nice bull early in the morning of opening day of the late rifle hunt.

The thing that really impressed me about High Top Outfitters is that they hire local guides who really know the country and can spot elk like I could not believe. We hunted in places I could have never found and saw bulls elk in all of them. They really know their stuff. I was also really appreciative of Shane in being sensitive to my limited mobility during the late rifle, and assisting me in getting a great bull in spite of my limitations.

Having waited 12 years to draw this tag and knowing this was most likely the hunt of a lifetime, chosing High Top Outfitters was the only way to go.
High Top Outfitters provided video, photos and consultation beginning early on in the Spring and through the Summer of 2010. Their knowledge and expertise prepared me mentally and phyically for the hunt. On my visit to Utah, this past summer, the crew at High Top Outfitters allowed me to familiarize myself with the unit and in meeting the crew I was assured I was in the best of hands.
In November the High Top Outfitters crew had pre-scouted some bulls prior to my arrival. Daily, the crew and I were on the mountain from dawn to dusk and when we weren't on the mountain, I was impressed by the amount of video the outfitters had available for us to study.
We spent 6 days total on the hunt. I was encouraged by High Top Outfitters to take my time and never felt pressured by the crew. The hunt and my experience seemed as important to them as it was to me. On day six, High Top Outfitters brought in the horses and we rode into a new area. I killed my bull late that afternoon.
The trip concluded with the biggest bull that I have taken to date, thanks in great part to the outstanding crew at High Top Outfitters. The attention to detail, the quality of service and the support offered by all the folks at High Top Outfitters exceded my expectations.

I had a great time hunting with High Top Outfitters Guide Marty Hansen this year.We did some pre scouting before this hunt. We found some great bulls. However, the unit is way over hunted and too many tags are given out for this area. My expectations were to high. I wanted a 350+ bull, but the Manti unit overall is closer to low 300's unit.
We had several negatives we were facing this year. We had a full moon, extremely high temps, sheep herd's, a very late rut and my physical limitations.
Marty had a very nice camp area for us. We had a nice eating area. We hunted hard each day. We put on about 800 miles during our 11 days there on the four wheeler.
The knowledge of Marty was amazing. He had a name for every canyon we hunted or were around.
On the 8th day of the hunt, we spotted some elk early, so we hurried over to them. A bull bugled and all hell broke loose. Here they come down of the side of the canyon. We started cow calling. The bull bugled again and started to come up from the bottom. He made the mistake of sticking his body out in the open for 1 second, and that is when I put the 300 Ultra Magnum from Christensen Arms to work. The 180 grain slug blew through both lungs and heart. It was all over then. We all went up and celebrated.
The whole hunt was very hard and challenging. I passed up several bulls.
I would highly recommend High Top Outfitters because Outfitter Jay Simon and Outfitter Shane Scott have done a lot of work organizing a great team. They are professional and have secured guides that are local to your tag area. The High Top Outfitter Guides know the units they hunt very well.

I first spoke with Outfitter Jay Simon in 2008 about draw consultation and what hunt I should look at for my LE tag that I was getting enough points to draw. I planned on using High Top Outfitters for a fully guided hunt until the economy went south in 2010 and I drew the Pahvant late tag the same year.

Having hunted in Utah my whole life and with alot of help, I thought I could find a great bull. We scouted pre season and saw some good bulls and were ready to go. We set up a camp, had a crew of guys with good optics and the 2 days prior to the hunt we saw hundreds of elk and a handful of good bulls; the next day when the trucks and wheelers roared up the mountain, everything changed. The elk move out of the areas they were using and retreat to the backcountry. We hunted 6 straight days, passed a few bulls early on and then it got very difficult and we quit seeing bulls and ran out of new ideas and area to look at.

On day 6, staring at a potential pot of "tag soup", I called Outfitter Shane Scott and booked a hunt to finish out my hunt. Outfitter Shane Scott and Spotter Chris Blad had just tagged another hunter out the night before and I was lucky they had time to hunt with me. These guys are outstanding and know this unit like no one else. Chris went to one of his honey holes and glassed a good bull from over 2 miles away; he had us come in from the bottom for a better look.

It was a good bull that I wanted to take so we got in on that bull the next morning. I had prepared to shoot at long distance using a custom Rem 700 from Pacnor barrels, chambered in 7mm Rem Mag, shooting 180 gr Bergers and a custom turret from Greybull Precision. We snuck in to 440 yards, dialed the turret, used the appropriate hash mark in the scope for wind hold and put a good shot on him. These big bulls are tough, although that Berger turned the boiler room inside out he took 2 more good hits to put him down for good.

I couldn't be happier and I 110% recommend and endorse High Top Outfitters. These guys live, eat, and breathe this stuff and they want to get each and every client a great animal and they will do whatever it takes to get it done. Sincerely,

Even though the quality of big bulls on the Fishlake has declined, we did look at several nice 6x6's that I didn't want because they were badly busted up. I ended up taking a decent 5x5 that was nearly indentical on both sides and completely intact.
Taylor has some good pictures of the rocky outcropping I took him on with a 500yd shot from the valley floor. If he fell forward it was a 100 ft drop and would have been really busted up. That Nosler Accubond dropped him in his tracks and he never moved.
I hope to get the chance to hunt with High Top Outfitters again someday, whether it be deer, antelope, moose, bison or perhaps even elk if I am graced long enough with the ability to be able to hunt. Respectfully,

2010 Utah LE Bull Elk Client Brad Roark's Hunt Testimonial

I purchased a tag at auction for the Early Rifle season of 2010 in the Central Mountains, Nebo hunting area on a recommendation from a friend who has hunted with High Top Outfitters on several occasions.
After the purchase, Outfitters Jay Simon and Shane Scott contacted me several times to discuss; physical requirements, equipment, guide, scouting reports, etc. Jay and Shane informed me that my guide would be Kip Farrer from Nephi. I talked to Kip several times prior to my hunt and he provided photos of a couple of bulls in the 340” to 350” class. Kip was in excellent shape, enthusiastic, fun to be around and more importantly he was very knowledgeable of the hunting area.
I arrived a couple of days early to do some scouting and Kip was able to locate one of the bulls from the photos. We hunted that bull the first morning but could not get within shooting range. The next four days with filled with opportunities at bulls. The fourth morning I took a bull that measured 315” after a missed opportunity on a 340” the night before.
There were no surprises or disappointments on this hunt! I look forward to my next opportunity to hunt with High Top Outfitters.

Antonio's First Big Game Hunt, 2010

Back in May 2010 our HTO friend and fellow Officer, Sgt. Franco Aguilar was killed in the line of duty in a tragic accident that threw him from a bridge. He and I hunted yearly on at least one hunt. He was a great friend.

Well here is the rest of the story as our hunting adventures have been cut short: About April 20 I received confirmation that Franco had drawn his Limited Entry Antelope Tag we had been waiting for after 3 years of trying. He had some real good luck and drew out almost every year for some kind of hunt.

On April 29 Franco was taken from us. After the funeral and everything started slowing down I spoke to Franco's oldest son Antonio who was 16. Franco and I had discussed getting Antonio on a hunt with us. I asked Antonio if he would like to hunt the Antelope hunt his dad drew out. He told me that he wanted to do it. So I made some calls and the Utah DNR would not re-issue the tag to Antonio which surprised me. However, Lt. Scott Dalebout in the Southern Region contacted the CWMU manager Shayne Ford who after hearing the details gave Antonio one of his landowner vouchers.

Well step one out of the way. Now we needed to get Antonio hunters safety. So I got Antonio, his sister Alyssa and my daughter in hunters safety back in June. I sat through the class with them, we got the shooting done and they all passed.

In September I contacted Shayne. He sent us the voucher, we secured the tag and the hunt plans began. Franco used my 257 Weatherby with Nosler Ballistic Tips and Accubonds on all of his hunts with me. Well Antonio wanted to do the same. We went out to the range and shot my .257 with some 3610 FPS 100 grain Ballistic Tips. Antonio was shooting great groups and I felt confident going into the hunt.

Shayne scouted the area. He gave us some good information as he was busy guiding deer and elk hunts. High Top Outfitters Owner, Outfitter Jay Simon, HTO Guide Matt Rhinehart and I headed out with Antonio. We made the two hour drive, grabbed some breakfast and began the hunt. We located a buch of Antelope and a few good bucks. We made a move on 3 nice bucks. We got set up and were trying to decide which one to take when Matt spotted a real tall buck we guessed to be 16 plus inches. The buck had some does with him. We made a move on him and Antonio got an opportunty at him at about 350 yards. The shot missed and off went our buck. We wasted no time in getting back after it. We located one of the other bucks we wanted. This buck had a real nice curl to him with good mass. We got an opportunity at him. We set up Antonio on a bi-pod. The buck turned and at 310 yards the ballistic tip did its job. A short run, down he went. We all started yelling in excitement. Antonio had just completed one of my long awaited dreams I had for his father Franco. Franco would rely on me yearly to choose his hunt and then we would get it done if he drew out.

The buck was just over 13.5 inches. We took photos and then headed for home. I was proud to see Antonios concentration in a fast moving situation. His dad was a great shot. The apple does not fall far from the tree.

Jay Simon, Matt Rhinehart and I were fortunate to participate in Antonios first hunting adventure. We were humbled by the experience. Antonio is a part of our HTO family just like his dad was. We will do it again......

2010 Disabled Hunter Angela Nowers Monroe Late Bull Elk

In 2010 I drew the Fishlake early hunt quite unexpectedly, only having 7 points. When I found out I had drawn the tag, I knew it would be a tough decision whether to do it myself or go guided. I was on a construction job out of town for the entire time leading up to the hunt, so I was not going to be able to get away for scouting. After much deliberation and convincing my wife, and half way into the summer, I finally decided to hire a guide.

I had never used a guide before, but I had been fortunate to accompany my dad on a few guided hunts, so it wasn’t a completely foreign concept to me. I didn’t do a whole lot of research. High Top Outfitters ended up being the only outfitter I contacted. They came recommended by Carter’s / Huntin’ Fool, and I also talked to a client from the previous year. Armed with the references, an hour or so on their website, and a lengthy phone conversation with Outfitter Shane Scott, I was convinced I had found my guide.

Within a few days of my initial contact with Shane, he had Guide Taylor Albrecht get in touch with me and tell me about the unit and the bulls that were there. I was impressed to find out that Taylor had grown up hunting the unit and had several successful guided hunts under his belt. Taylor would be my guide.

The thing that really sold me on High Top was the concept of hiring a hunting partner rather that an outfitter. Taylor was always professional on the phone and in person, but he was also laid back enough for me to feel like I was talking to a friend. By the time the hunt arrived, I felt like I knew Taylor pretty well, and we were able to get right to the business of hunting elk. Taylor even brought his dad along for the first few days to help around camp and lend an extra set of eyes. My father and brother were able to join us for a few days as well.

My once in a lifetime big bull rut hunt didn’t turn out quite as I had hoped. Warm weather and a full moon kept the elk quiet and fairly inactive during the day, and my expectations of picking and choosing from herds of love sick, noisy elk quickly diminished with each new day. The first four days of the hunt yielded a sub-300 5-point, two spikes, and a very quick glimpse on days 3 and 4 at a 330 to 340 class bull. We were able to pattern this bigger bull, and considering what I had (or hadn’t) been seeing to date, I decided to forego my quest for a 350 bull and try for this one on day 5.

Taylor conceived an ambush plan that ultimately proved successful, and we were able to connect with the bull right at first light on day 5. It also helped that a storm was moving in and the bulls finally started making noise that morning. A little luck coupled with a solid plan resulted in a dead elk.

My Fishlake bull is everything I could have dreamed of for my first bull - a very wide and symmetrical 6x6, measuring 52” wide and grossing 335 inches, with nice mass and beautiful ivory tips. He was a magnificent animal.

I had a great time hunting with Taylor, and I would love the opportunity to do it again. Hopefully Lady Luck and Utah DNR will grant me the opportunity.

I last drew Utah 17 years ago, and with only 3 points I managed to draw the best Unit in the World perhaps, the Pahvant. I interviewed by phone 5 outfitters, 4 recommended by Carters Hunting Service and Doyle Moss twice each.

After considering quality of guides, costs, and personalities and past experiences of each, I chose HighTop Outfitters in Richfield, Utah about 3 months before the start of the hunt. Outfitter Shane Scott communicated weekly with me regarding scouting reports, necessary equipment, shooting accuracy, and other updates concerning the hunt right up until it was time to drive to Utah for the hunt.

My guide, Adam Stevens was very likeable, extremely hard working, and knew how to find big elk, how to maximize the opportunity for a shot at them, and knows the unit like the back of his hand. He is an avid hunter and has exceptional skills when it comes to thinking “like an elk”. Shane willingly and excitedly encouraged me to bring a videographer with me for the hunt, which was very generous in all aspects. My objective was to take a 370 or better bull with a bow, and just having turned 60 years old knew that the physical challenge of this hunt would be my biggest obstacle. Adam had located 4 bulls that would meet this criteria by the time I arrived and he wasted no time in finding them once we put feet to the ground. We had two of these caliber bulls in our spotting scope at the end of the first afternoon of hunting. Pressure from other unskilled hunters spooked the bulls the next morning, but Adam said “ I know how to make this happen. I have a hunch where they went”. Sure enough, we relocated them the next evening, found them and bedded them the next morning. We stalked to within 40 yards of his herd that evening, unfortunately the big bull, obviously very wary, would not show himself, but was there. Rather than risk spooking the elk, Adam suggested we move to an ambush location to get on this herd going to evening feed. This worked well, but again, the big bull stayed deep into the timber and did not present a shot opportunity, but we “made it happen”. We were back on the bull the following morning, but thanks to other hunters choosing to hunt upwind, the bull was again spooked badly and we never got another opportunity at this giant bull.

We then moved to some lower country where the hunting pressure was not so concentrated, set up on a wallow, and had less than 30 yard encounters, some as close a 5 yards with at least 15 bulls over the course of two days. That afternoon a 380 plus bull approached the water but his 4 cows led him downstream to water. This bull bedded ¼ mile away and rather than attempting a stalk we decided to let him come back into water that evening. I said a short prayer of gratitude and asked my higher power for some help before it got too dark.Suddenly, just at last light, a very large bull, being led by 4 cows literally running full tilt to water came into view. I believed this was my bull. Precious minutes passed while the bull made it to water. I now had to make something happen! I squeezed off the shot. The arrow flew right where I had wanted it to go, and the Mathews Monster and Grim Reaper broad heads did the rest. The bull staggered and fell dead not 20 yards from where he was standing.

Adam and his brother Royce packed the bull out the next morning and took the meat to the locker, all just as promised. The Bull had good mass, great spread, and field scored by Guide Royce Stevens at 351. You have to be careful for what you pray for; prayers do get answered. I have over 1000 minutes of unbelievable video to edit, got the entire kill sequence on video, and all the other encounters up close and personal of the Pahvant herd in addition to a very respectable archery trophy.

The overall experience with High Top Outfitters was beyond expectations, and having had previous bad experiences with outfitted hunts, I cannot recall a single event while on this hunt that led me to believe anything other than that I had selected a very top outfitter that does what they say they can do. We got an average of 5 hours of sleep a night for 10 days straight, and never did I hear anything from our guide but encouragement and excitement for the next day’s hunt. This attitude kept me in the game. Would I ask for Adam if there is ever a “next time”? This is a no-brainer!!! You bet I would.

I'm writing this as much as a "thank you" as a testimonial. Shortly after drawing the Fish Lake non-resident archery tag with 10 points, I stumbled onto your outfit. From my first conversation, I felt like you folks really were concerned about my success. When I suggested I come out in mid-july to scout the unit, Shane and Matt gave us several days of their time, and showed us some exceptional bulls. While I was driving out to hunt, Matt was calling me from the top of the mountains in the unit where he was camped glassing a couple of exceptional bulls. The night before the hunt started, Matt took me to his lookout where I was able to see 3 bulls over 320", with one being probably over 360" which is close to the top end for that unit. Matt's ability to spot game was uncanny, and I was awed by the speed in which he'd find elk. While I didn't kill the biggest bull in the unit, I took a good P&Y bull that Matt had spotted still hunting on the 8th day of my hunt (Aug. 28th). I had never had the confidence to still hunt through the timber with a bow, but Matt had the skill set to pull that off.I've bowhunted elk every year for the last 21 years. I've done everything from a DIY backpack hunt into the National forest to a top end ranch hunt. I have been very frustrated with the draw for a number of years, and was really mad when my brother drew a tag in 2008 for LE Elk, the very tag I had been trying to draw for so long.I went along with my brother on that hunting trip along with the guides at High Top Outfitters and liked what I saw.

I started talking to Shane about the hunts and the draw and he gave me some really good advice on how to draw the tag I wanted and what the odds were of drawing that tag. I also talked with Jay Simon and Rex Scott and they thought it would be a great hunt for me.

I finally drew my LE Elk tag in 2009 for the Mount Dutton late hunt with 11 points and alot of sleepless nights.Shane was great about keeping in touch with me about spotting bulls all spring and how great they looked, he helped me with bullet information and put the finishing touches on the ballistics for me. When the hunts started in August he would text me pictures of some of the elk they were taking in the area. They looked really good to me.

I left home the Thursday afternoon before the hunt started so I could get the best place to camp. Shane came on Friday and we spent that day spotting elk, we saw 25 bulls in a meadow fighting and went back to camp for a sleepless night before the opening day.

We hunted for 3 days and saw a lot of Elk, just not that perfect one. Finally on the 4th day, I found the Elk that was mine, they put me in the right place at the right time and the rest is history.

Thanks to Shane and Jay. Thanks to the guides, they made me feel like family. Thanks to my brother Mike for assisting with spotting.

In 2009 I drew a Utah Plateau Archery Antelope tag. 3 Members of my family also drew out for the archery hunt. We were looking forward to a fun family hunt together.
Being from California I contacted the Huntin Fool and they recommended High Top Outfitters. I spoke to Outfitter Shane Scott by phone and booked a 5 day hunt. My family wanted to have a good hunting experience.
I was contacted by Guide Ryan Mccollin and met him on the unit. Ryan had located a nice camping location for our hunt.
Ryan had done some scouting and located some waterholes to sit on. The first couple of days we struggled. There were lots of other hunters. The antelope were nervous which was making the bowhunting difficult.
Ryan kept working hard for me and located a couple of waterholes in some secluded areas. Ryan went out after dark and took down blinds that were at poor waterhole locations just so we would have them in the morning to use elsewhere. Some extra effort on Ryan's part to go out after scouting all day paid off big for us.
On Day 3, I took my antelope at about 1000 AM sitting on a waterhole. Within minutes of my harvest I learned that my son Andrew had also harvested his antelope sitting on another waterhole Ryan located.
Our group of 4 went home on day 3. We took 2 archery antelope in 3 days. We had a great family hunt together.
Guide Ryan Mccollin worked hard and gave us a hunt to remember.

I want to thank High Top Outfitters for a great elk hunt. It started off with a simple email asking what would be my best chance to draw an elk permit as a non-resident with only 5 points. Shane Scott sent a reply with helpful information and drawing odds on about four different units. All the elk units sounded great. With only five points and with the best odds I put in for a Late Fishlake permit.
I was surprised when the results came out and I drew the permit. I let Shane know that I drew and he sounded as happy as I did. We talked back and forth a couple times and I decided to book a guided elk hunt with High Top Outfitters. It seemed like forever for the hunt to start but Shane kept me updated on how the spring was going, horn growth and some bulls they were spotting. Once the elk hunts started I received emails with pictures of all the great bulls the other hunters were harvesting.
A couple weeks before my hunt my guide for the hunt, David Byee, called me up and introduced himself and told me what to expect and asked me what my expectations for the hunt were. It was nice to know that David pretty much grew up on the unit and has hunted the area his whole life. The week before my hunt David called me every couple days telling me about some of the bulls he was spotting.
I arrived in Richfield the day before my hunt. David picked me up after lunch and we headed up to the unit to spot bulls. On the way there David told me all about the area we were hunting. He knew every canyon, draw, hill and anything else you might need to know about the hunting unit. We arrived at the area we were going to spot and right off the bat David was finding Bulls. It took me a little time but I finally started spotting bulls. That night we spotted a total of 35 bulls. After talking and comparing bulls we narrowed it down to three different bulls we wanted to go after.
Opening morning David picked me up early. We got to our pre-planned location and I was able to shoot a big bull 30 minutes into opening morning. It was a once in a lifetime hunt, and high-top outfitters made every minute enjoyable. Thanks Shane & David.

Dean flew in from New York on Saturday 2-14-09. On Sunday 2-15-2009 HTO houndsman Matt Paystrup cut a fresh lion track. Team HTO put 3 solid hounds on the track. The hounds had to cover a lot of bare ground and patchy snow. The dogs burned up the track and 2 hours later Dean was looking at his Utah mountain lion in a tree. Dean made 2 good 20 yard shots with a Glock 26, 9mm handgun and the trophy was his. Congrats Dean on a great Utah lion. I hope you made some great memories. Not bad for a guy who had never shot a handgun. Thanks to everybody who assisted us on this successful hunt. You know who you are.

Rex Scott drew out a Utah late limited entry elk tag with 12 points. Rex booked a hunt with High Top Outfitters. Rex took this 351 6X6 on the third day. Rex's son Mitchell spotted the bull at about 3 miles away. The High Top Outfitters staff sized up the bull and Rex decided he was a keeper. The crew made a stalk and Rex took the bull when it got up to feed. Rex took the bull with one 290 yard shot. He used a Browning A-bolt 300 WSM, Leupold VX3 scope and 180 grain Nosler Accubonds. close proximity to the areas we hunt.
